Markus Tracy was born in Tokyo, Japan, and raised in Germany, Holland, and the United States. After completing his BFA from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and his MFA from Otis College of Design in Los Angeles, Markus emerged as an multidisciplinary artist with a socially-engaged practice focusing on murals, installations, and site-specific projects. Along with exhibiting his work nationally, Markus has been awarded numerous public art commissions, grants, and artist in residencies throughout the United States.

Statement of Work

Artist Statement:

My art work over the past three years has evolved more around community and social engagement through community murals, organizing pop-up art exhibits, and community activism in and through the arts.

Pop-up art exhibits are ways of creating new opportunities in offering local artists opportunities of exhibiting their art works; especially in abandon buildings, motel rooms, or even traditional tipis. Depending on the circumstance, these pop-up exhibits are decided between local artists and those who support the arts. Goals of these pop-up exhibits are not only an opportunity to showcase art but to activate these neglected spaces leading to possible economic development.

The community activism through pop-up exhibits have also led to murals focusing on community revitalization, cultural and social awareness, and histories past and present. These murals be it school or community begins with historical research actively involving many people who are tied to their communities. Sometimes, this research spawns surprising discoveries that no one never knew. These discoveries and activism, only helps to guide communities of their understanding that the past can represent a foundation not only for the present but for the future.
